NYPD Takes Action to Protect Citizens after Terrorist Attack in Manhattan
Manhattan, NY- On Tuesday October 31, the second most deadly terror attack in New York’s history since 9/11 took place. Eight were killed and almost a dozen were injured when a 29 year-old drove a rental pick up truck into a crowded Manhattan street. The truck collided with a school bus on Chambers Street injuring two children and two adults. When the suspect stopped the truck, he came out, holding two weapons that looked to be shot guns, but were later discovered to be a pellet gun and a paintball gun. As the suspect was running from the scene carrying his weapons, he shouted, “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is great”.
An NYPD Officer shot the suspect in the abdomen, and the suspect was transported to a hospital where he refused to answer any initial first round questions. Former counter-terrorism agent, Fred Burton states, “These kinds of attacks are almost impossible to stop without very specific intelligence information about the person that intends to carry this out”.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo released the statement that there is no evidence to suggest there’s a wider threat or plot, but warned that people will see more security forces out of caution. In the aftermath, city and state law enforcement agencies increased security at high-profile locations. Despite the carnage, Manhattan’s annual Village Halloween Parade, which draws out thousands of people a year, still went on.
New York’s plan is to keep moving. Mayor Bill de Blasio states, “We know that this action was meant to break our spirit, but we also know New Yorkers are strong, New Yorker’s are resilient. Our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence, an act to intimidate us”. Many attacks just like this have been occurring all over the world. ISIS groups are instructing their followers to drive through crowds of people, because it’s the easiest way to kill mass amounts of people at once. U.S. Law Enforcement is investigating these ISIS members to prevent another attack from happening.
